As a mum with one child in daycare and another in primary school, I’m constantly thinking about how to prepare them for the beautifully diverse world we live in. That’s why I’m so passionate about what we do at Aware Bear—and how our resources can help your early childhood setting celebrate Australia’s rich cultural tapestry every single day.

Quality early childhood education is about more than just facts and figures. It’s about nurturing foundational life skills, fostering a strong sense of identity, and developing deep respect for others. These values are central to Australia’s National Quality Framework (NQF), including the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) V2.0, 2022 and the My Time, Our Place (MTOP) Framework for School Age Care.

Why Diversity Matters in Early Learning

1. Building Identity and Belonging

When children see their own cultures, languages, and family structures reflected in their learning environment, it sends a powerful message: You are valued, and you belong here. This directly supports EYLF and MTOP Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity. As a parent, helping my boys feel secure in who they are is non-negotiable.

2. Connecting with and Contributing to Their World

Our children are growing up in an interconnected society. Learning about Diwali, Lunar New Year, or NAIDOC Week isn’t just about stories—it’s about making real connections and expanding their worldview. This supports Outcome 2: Children are connected with and contribute to their world, encouraging respect for diverse ways of knowing, doing, and being.

3. Fostering Empathy and Respect

Understanding diverse cultures helps children develop empathy. Through stories and activities, they learn to recognise and value differences, building respectful and caring relationships. This aligns with the frameworks’ principle of “secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships.” For example, when children hear about different family traditions or cultural celebrations, they begin to appreciate that others may experience the world differently—and that those differences are something to be respected and celebrated.

4. Creating Truly Inclusive Environments

The NQF calls for “equity, inclusion and high expectations” for all children. This includes embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and creating culturally safe spaces. Aware Bear supports this goal through authentic storytelling—three of the books are co-authored by Trevor Fourmile, a respected author and storyteller from the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people of Cairns, Far North Queensland. Trevor is known for bringing traditional Dreamtime stories to life, including Gurril, Storm Bird, How the Cassowary Got Its Helmet, and Bajirriga the Turtle. His work helps children connect with First Nations culture and learn about respect, nature, and community through engaging narratives. Each Aware Bear book also features an Acknowledgement of Country written by Joshua Gilbert, helping educators introduce meaningful cultural practices into everyday learning.

5. Strengthening Communication Skills

Each Aware Bear book includes discussion starters designed to spark meaningful conversations and critical thinking. These tools support EYLF and MTOP Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators, helping children express ideas and engage thoughtfully with diverse themes.
